Reproductive Freedom for All Congratulates Abigail Spanberger on Winning the First Debate in the Virginia Gubernatorial Race
Washington, DC — Reproductive Freedom for All congratulates Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger on winning the first debate in the Virginia Gubernatorial race. In June, Reproductive Freedom for All endorsed the Congresswoman because Democratic governors are a key backstop to threats on all levels and are stepping up to defend our fundamental rights and freedoms.
Ahead of tonight’s debate, the Spanberger campaign released an ad highlighting Earle-Sears’ anti-abortion record. The 30-second spot, titled “More Disturbing,” features audio from an interview Earle-Sears did in 2022 on now-Republican lieutenant governor nominee John Reid’s radio show in which Earle-Sears equates abortion to murder and then threatens violence on people who disagree with her.
Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju released the following statement:
“Abigail Spanberger will protect Virginians’ fundamental rights and freedoms as governor. Winsome Earle-Sears has an extreme anti-abortion record and would ban abortion given the chance. Congratulations to Representative Spanberger for a decisive victory on tonight’s debate stage.”
Since the fall of Roe abortion access has been decimated in Southern states, leaving Virginia as a safe haven for people seeking abortion care. Spanberger’s opponent, Winsome Earle-Sears, has a long anti-abortion record, including openly supporting a 15-week abortion ban and saying Virginia should copy Texas’ abortion ban, SB 8, a law that would ban nearly all abortion care in Virginia.
Reproductive Freedom for All has also endorsed Mikie Sherrill in New Jersey and Aaron Ford in Nevada for Governor, and is backing frontline candidates across the country who will be vital to protecting access to reproductive care.
