Reproductive Freedom for All Freedom Responds to Preventable Death of Tierra Walker

San Antonio, TX — Today, new reporting from ProPublica revealed the death of 37-year-old Tierra Walker at Methodist Hospital Northeast in San Antonio. According to ProPublica, more than 90 doctors were involved in Walker’s care, but not one offered her the option to end her pregnancy.

Walker repeatedly asked her doctors for lifesaving abortion care due to preexisting conditions that put her at risk for severe complications. She had developed a dangerous case of preeclampsia in a previous pregnancy, leading to the stillbirth of her twins.

Candi Miller and Amber Nicole Thurman were among the first reported deaths as a direct result of abortion bans. Last year, ProPublica also reported on the preventable deaths of three Texas women because of the state’s abortion ban: Josseli Barnica, Porsha Ngumezi, and Nevaeh Crain. Amid these reports, lawmakers in Georgia dismissed all members of the Maternal Mortality Commission, and are keeping the new members a secret, and in Texas, officials skipped comprehensive reviews of maternal mortality and morbidity data.

Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju released the following statement:

“Tierra Walker should be alive today. Her tragic death was entirely preventable, and because of anti-abortion extremists including Greg Abbott, Ken Paxton, Ted Cruz, and Donald Trump, a young son is now without his mother. These politicians came between Tierra and the lifesaving medical care she desperately needed and repeatedly asked for. Even Texas’ vague and poorly defined ‘exceptions’ wouldn’t protect Tierra, and her story makes painfully clear what we’ve said all along: Abortion bans are deadly, and these are only the stories we know about. Anti-abortion politicians who claim to care about life are once again responsible for a mother needlessly losing hers.”
