Reproductive Freedom for All Freedom Responds to Preventable Death of Porsha Ngumezi
Houston, TX — Today, new reporting revealed the death of 35-year-old Porsha Ngumezi at the emergency department at Houston Methodist Sugar Land. The death was preventable according to more than a dozen doctors who reviewed a detailed summary of her case for ProPublica. Medical experts said when reviewing her case it was clear Porsha needed an emergency D&C. D&Cs — a staple of maternal health care — can be lifesaving, and are also a method of abortion care.
Candi Miller and Amber Nicole Thurman were among the first reported deaths as a direct result of a lack of access to abortion care because of a ban in Georgia. In late October, ProPublica also reported on the preventable deaths of two Texas women because of the state’s abortion ban: Josseli Barnica and Nevaeh Crain.
Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju released the following statement:
“If Porsha Ngumezi had received the emergency care she needed, she would be alive right now. Her tragic death was entirely preventable. The only reason she is not with us is because of Donald Trump, Greg Abbott, and every single Republican politician who helped put Texas’ abortion ban in place and created a culture of fear for providers. While we mourn her death, we must demand that the Texas legislature takes action to end this deadly crisis.”
