Reproductive Freedom for All Responds to U.S. House Passing NDAA With Anti-Transgender Provision for Youth

Washington, DC This week, the U.S. House passed the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) with the inclusion of a provision to prohibit the military’s health care system from providing medically necessary treatments to the transgender children of U.S. service members. This is the first time since the 1990s that Congress has put explicitly anti-LGBTQ+ provisions into statute with the passage of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell and the Defense of Marriage Act. Extreme politicians are now utilizing the NDAA as a tool to push their hatred-fueled anti-trans agenda—intending to cause harm to service members and their families.

Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju released the following statement in response:

“This provision undermines health care for transgender children of service members and blocks them from accessing the medically necessary care they deserve. This leaves service members to navigate an already hostile medical system to get their families the health care they need. As the reproductive health, rights, and justice community knows all too well, politicians have no place inserting themselves into decisions that should be between patients, families, and their doctors. We call on Senate Democrats to remove these dangerous provisions and stop the politicization of the NDAA.”
