ICYMI: Abortion Access and Economic Stability Are Inseparable Issues for Voters Heading Into 2026 Midterm Elections

Last week, NPR reported that voters are deeply concerned about the cost of living, affordability, and access to reproductive healthcare—issues that are increasingly shaping how they think about their lives, families, and futures ahead of the 2026 midterms.

These concerns are not separate. Access to reproductive health care has always been tied to financial security. The ability to decide if, when, or how to start or grow a family affects nearly every aspect of people’s lives—including their finances and economic stability. Having access to birth control, abortion care, fertility treatment, and more can shape whether someone is able to stay in school, pay their bills, or plan for the future. Almost 3-in-4 individuals (73%) say that their personal financial situation is a major factor when deciding to have a child.

As Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju told NPR, “Most voters who care about reproductive freedom also understand the interconnection between the rising cost of healthcare, the rising costs of childcare, the lack of maternal healthcare in their communities. And they need to hear about these issues together.”

When reproductive health care is restricted, families bear the brunt of the financial consequences. People who are already facing high costs for housing, groceries, and childcare are now being forced to travel across state lines for care, pay out of pocket for medical costs, or delay getting care altogether.

The freedom to make decisions about your body, your family, and your future cannot exist in name only. It requires real access to care and the economic stability to make those decisions without political interference. Voters understand that health care access and economic stability are connected—and as the 2026 midterm elections approach, they are looking for leaders who share that understanding.
