Reproductive Freedom for All Applauds Biden-Harris Administration’s Call for Court Reform
Washington, DC — Today, the Biden-Harris administration announced support for major U.S. Supreme Court reform, endorsing policies that would establish term limits and impose a binding code of ethics on justices. The administration also voiced support for a constitutional amendment that would undo the Court’s dangerous decision granting U.S. presidents broad immunity. This historic announcement comes on the heels of numerous reports revealing corruption, ethics scandals, and extremism from Justices Thomas and Alito.
Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju released the following statement in response:
“Our nation’s highest court has been compromised by anti-abortion extremists, leading to millions of Americans losing their right to abortion. These corrupt, conservative justices are putting our freedom and democracy at risk—and we must act now to address this crisis. The winner of the presidential election could name two or more Supreme Court justices, and public faith in the Court remains at a record low. We’re grateful to the Biden-Harris administration for joining our calls to reform the Court, and we look forward to working with them to ensure it happens.”
Reproductive Freedom for All announced its support for court reform in November 2022 following reporting from the New York Times finding that Justice Alito shared the outcome of the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Burwell v. Hobby Lobby Stores “weeks before it was announced,” allowing an anti-abortion activist “to prepare a public relations push” and tip off the head of the Hobby Lobby chain. The 2014 Hobby Lobby ruling allowed certain bosses to block their employees’ access to birth control. Alito authored the opinion in the case himself and later authored the opinion overturning Roe v. Wade in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization.
In the time since, Reproductive Freedom for All has continued to call for court reform and investigations into corruption on the Court, endorsing Court expansion, calling for the impeachment or resignation of Justices Thomas, and demanding for Justice Alito to rescue himself from cases involving the election after reporting revealed that he waved a January 6th insurrection symbol outside his home.
