NARAL Pro-Choice America Calls for Court Reform and Senate Investigation in Response to NYT Report Revealing Hobby Lobby Decision Was Leaked to Anti-Choice Activist
Washington, DC — Today, the New York Times published a report revealing that a longtime anti-choice activist was told the outcome of the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Burwell v. Hobby Lobby Stores “weeks before it was announced,” allowing him “to prepare a public relations push” and tip off the head of the Hobby Lobby chain. The 2014 Hobby Lobby ruling allowed certain bosses to block their employees’ access to birth control. The decision applied to more than half of all U.S. workers—that’s the tens of millions of workers at companies that are more than 50% owned by five or fewer people.
NARAL Pro-Choice America President Mini Timmaraju released the following statement:
“Today’s admission by a longtime anti-choice activist underscores the long overdue need for meaningful Court reform and a Senate Judiciary Committee investigation into how he had access to this decision. The anti-choice movement has a long history of extremist and unethical behavior, and these newest revelations are proof that their long campaign to influence the Court worked. The Court, already facing a legitimacy crisis, must answer for its failure to safeguard information that impacts our lives, families, and futures before the American public. Americans, including the 8 in 10 who support legal abortion, want the Supreme Court to be held accountable, and NARAL Pro-Choice America will be here to do just that.”
