Reproductive Freedom for All Applauds Governor Abigail Spanberger’s Response to Trump’s State of the Union Lies
Washington, DC — Last night, Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger delivered the Democratic response to Trump’s joint address to Congress and laid out exactly what’s at stake this November. Spanberger’s remarks told the real story of what everyday Americans are actually facing: the biggest health care cuts in modern history, deadly violence from federal immigration agents, coordinated attacks on health care, and a systemic erosion of democracy itself.
In her speech, the governor called out the reproductive freedom violations being committed against people in detention centers and escalating attacks on our communities by federal immigration agents: “They have ripped nursing mothers away from their babies, they have sent children—a little boy in a blue bunny hat—to far-off detention centers, and they have killed American citizens on our streets.”
In 2025, Spanberger ran a historic campaign that centered her commitment to protecting access to health care and reproductive freedom. Throughout Spanberger’s campaign and with her decisive victory, Virginians made clear that reproductive freedom is a galvanizing issue that wins elections. Voters from coast to coast reaffirmed that truth: In 2025, every Reproductive Freedom For All-endorsed candidate won.
Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju released the following statement:
“Last night, Governor Spanberger laid out a vision for this country rooted in the fundamental belief that every American deserves the freedom to make decisions about their own health, family, and future—and reaffirmed Democrats’ commitment to fight for it. Abigail Spanberger ran and won on reproductive freedom, and Democrats chose her to deliver that message on the national stage. Voters have rejected the Trump administration’s anti-democracy, anti-abortion extremism at every turn, and they will do it again in November.”
By working to elect champions up and down the ballot in 2025, Reproductive Freedom for All helped advance the Virginia Right to Reproductive Freedom Amendment, a measure to enshrine the fundamental right to reproductive health care, including abortion, in the state constitution. The amendment will go before Virginia voters for final approval in November.
This year, Virginia voters will also decide on a ballot measure to temporarily redraw the state’s congressional map, a critical step to protect democracy and restore fairness amid Trump-directed, Republican-led efforts to stack the deck and rig the midterms.
