Reproductive Freedom for All Celebrates Final Legislative Passage of Virginia Reproductive Freedom Amendment, Clearing the Way for November Ballot
Washington, DC — Yesterday, the Virginia Senate passed the Virginia Right to Reproductive Freedom Amendment, a measure to enshrine Virginians’ fundamental right to reproductive health care, including abortion, in the state constitution. This passage marks the completion of the two-session legislative effort—made possible by the 2025 elections—to put the amendment before voters on Virginia’s November ballot.
Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju released the following statement:
“This moment is the direct result of elections—and the tireless work of advocates and leaders who ran, voted, and organized with reproductive freedom on the line. Virginians elected champions who promised to protect abortion access, and they delivered. This November, Virginians will finally have the opportunity they’ve been fighting for: to enshrine reproductive freedom in their state constitution.”
In 2025, Reproductive Freedom for All launched a campaign to elect pro-reproductive freedom leaders Gov. Abigail Spanberger, Lt. Gov. Ghazala Hashmi, and Attorney General Jay Jones, and secure a reproductive freedom majority in the House of Delegates with the explicit goal of advancing the constitutional amendment to protect abortion.
That campaign included a six-figure paid canvass operation, targeted ads, and a campus organizing program at Virginia Tech. Reproductive Freedom for All knocked more than 40,000 doors, made over 9,000 calls, and mobilized our 112,000 members across the Commonwealth. Those electoral victories created the conditions for today’s passage and put Virginia on a clear path to become the next state to permanently protect reproductive freedom at the ballot box in 2026.
