Reproductive Freedom for All Launches Ad Campaign Holding Rep. Tom Barrett Accountable for Cutting Michiganders’ Health Care and Raising Costs

This week, Reproductive Freedom for All launched a five-figure digital ad buy in U.S. House district MI-07 to remind voters that Representative Tom Barrett voted to cut Medicaid, “defund” Planned Parenthood, and raise health care costs for Michigan families, and continued to stand by Donald Trump as he spewed blatant lies about the GOP-created health care crisis during last night’s State of the Union.

The ad, which targets women 40 and under in Barrett’s district on YouTube, is part of an ongoing accountability campaign to ensure voters know their representative sided with Donald Trump and GOP leadership to gut public health programs, strip access to lifesaving sexual and reproductive health care, and let Affordable Care Act (ACA) premiums skyrocket. Reproductive Freedom for All is also running ads in Arizona.

Reproductive Freedom for All Director of Michigan Campaigns Shanay Watson-Whittaker released the following statement:

“Congressman Tom Barrett must answer for his decision to put partisan politics before the people he was elected to serve. By choosing Trump over his own constituents, Barrett has raised health care costs for hardworking families and pushed essential care even farther out of reach. Michiganders deserve a leader who will fight to lower costs and expand health care access, not take it away. Come November, voters will hold Barrett accountable for failing Michiganders.”

How Rep. Barrett’s votes hurt Michiganders:

  • Three Planned Parenthood health centers in Michigan were forced to close because of Trump’s budget cuts, reducing Michiganders’ access to birth control, STI testing and treatment, lifesaving cancer screenings, and more essential sexual and reproductive health care.
  • Michigan saw a 12% decrease in abortion clinics between March 2024 and December 2025, despite the fact that voters overwhelmingly passed Prop 3 to enshrine the right to reproductive freedom—including abortion—into the state constitution in 2022. These closures underscore how hostile and unstable the federal landscape remains for abortion providers everywhere, including states that have acted to protect and expand care.
  • More than 450,000 Michiganders stand to lose their health insurance because of Trump’s deadly budget bill, and up to 13 rural hospitals are at risk of closing—forcing patients to travel farther for care, deepening existing barriers, and straining urban hospitals already stretched too thin.
  • Because Republicans, including Barrett refused to extend ACA enhanced premium tax credits, health care costs have skyrocketed—and a new report from Protect Our Care found that ACA enrollment in Michigan plummeted by more than 34,000 this year, with advocates warning the coverage gap will only grow, leading to higher costs and more uninsured families.

This latest ad buy builds on Reproductive Freedom for All’s sustained accountability efforts in Michigan. Throughout 2025, Reproductive Freedom for All Michigan hosted town halls and events on college campuses, launched billboards across the state, and delivered “Missing Person” posters to Barrett’s office after he voted to cut health care and repeatedly refused to face his constituents.
