Reproductive Freedom for All Applauds Senator Murray and Senate Democrats Calling Out FDA For Politically Motivated Review of Mifepristone
Washington, DC — Today, Senate Democrats, led by Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), sent a letter addressed to Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Martin Makary, condemning the Trump administration’s politicization of the scientific review process at the FDA and the unnecessary call for review of mifepristone. This letter follows one sent by Senate Republicans earlier this month—reflecting their relentless commitment to attacking reproductive freedom instead of working to end this government shutdown.
Today’s letter cites decades of peer-reviewed research and data proving the medication’s safety and efficacy, and warns that this so-called “review” is part of a broader effort to weaponize federal agencies and restrict access to abortion nationwide.
Reproductive Freedom for All, President and CEO Mini Timmaraju released the following statement:
“This bogus review based on junk science is nothing more than another poorly disguised backdoor abortion ban. Senate Democrats, led by Senator Patty Murray, are standing up to this administration’s lies and will continue to fight for our reproductive freedom. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Martin Makary are just doing Donald Trump’s dirty work—and Americans deserve to know the truth.”
Earlier this year, Secretary Kennedy asked Commissioner Makary to consider nationwide restrictions on mifepristone. Kennedy said decisions about mifepristone will ultimately go “through Trump”. Makary announced in June that the FDA is officially initiating a politically motivated review of mifepristone.
Last week, Reproductive Freedom for All filed a lawsuit seeking critical information and records from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) regarding the Trump-Vance administration’s efforts to restrict access to reproductive health care. The lawsuit follows a series of requests for public information that remain unlawfully unfulfilled. Reproductive Freedom for All is represented by Democracy Forward in the matter.
