Reproductive Freedom for All Condemns RFK Jr.’s Call for FDA Review of Mifepristone
Washington, DC — Today, during a Senate HELP Committee hearing, HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced that he has asked FDA Commissioner Makary to conduct a “complete review” of mifepristone—a baseless move rooted in disinformation, not science. This comes only weeks after Trump-appointed Makary signaled that he’s open to restricting mifepristone based on anti-abortion disinformation.
These alarming steps follow a pattern of coordinated attacks on medication abortion by anti-abortion extremists.
Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju released the following statement:
“Let’s be clear: RFK Jr.’s call for a review of mifepristone has nothing to do with patient safety and everything to do with pushing a dangerous political agenda. Mifepristone is one of the safest medications on the market, backed by decades of scientific evidence and used by millions of patients for abortion and miscarriage care. This administration is showing us they are ready and willing to use the full force of the federal government to eliminate abortion access nationwide.”
A Politico story published last week detailed how anti-abortion groups are planning to use a junk science “study” — really an anti-abortion propaganda piece by a Project 2025 sponsor organization — to call for medication abortion restrictions. Days later, Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) used that pseudo-study to introduce a measure that would restrict mifepristone, which is used in the most common method of abortion care.
Mifepristone has been FDA-approved and safely used for more than 20 years and is supported by leading medical organizations, including the American Medical Association and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
The vast majority of people in the U.S. support abortion access, including access to medication abortion.
