Reproductive Freedom for All Condemns Senate Republicans for Attacking Abortion Access Instead of Working to Reopen the Government
Washington, DC — As the federal government remains shut down for a second week, nearly all Republican senators sent a letter to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) urging the agency to suspend approval of the new generic version of mifepristone. The letter comes just days after the drug passed the standard and scientific approval process. The demand comes as Republicans’ own manufactured government shutdown halts critical services, delays paychecks for federal workers, and threatens to dismantle the Affordable Care Act and drive up health insurance costs for families across the country.
Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju released the following statement:
“Republicans have ground the government to a halt, jeopardizing millions of people’s livelihoods and well-being. They should be working around the clock to reopen the government, but instead they are using their time to attack abortion access and politicize the important and scientific work of the FDA. Rather than doing their jobs, Republicans are once again choosing to wage a political crusade against reproductive freedom.”
Mifepristone has been approved by the FDA for over two decades and is considered safe and effective by leading medical organizations. Last week, the FDA approved the new generic version through the standard and scientific approval process, which requires approval for medications that are chemically identical. Efforts to restrict or rescind its approval are part of a coordinated campaign by anti-abortion extremists to weaponize the FDA and impose a backdoor national abortion ban—even in states where abortion remains legal.
