Reproductive Freedom for All Arizona Responds to Arizona GOP Attempting To Undermine Prop. 139
PHOENIX, AZ — This week, Republican Rep. Rachel Keshel introduced HCR 2058, legislation that seeks to invalidate the will of the overwhelming majority of Arizona voters who passed a ballot measure in November to enshrine abortion rights. The bill proposes a new ballot referral that would permit the legislature to deny, restrict, or interfere with an Arizonan’s right to abortion care if it is determined to be “rationally related to a legitimate state interest.” The bill defines “state” as “any agency of this state or any political subdivision of this state,” meaning, if passed by voters, the legislature and other anti-abortion state officials would once again have the power to ban or restrict abortion care statewide.
Reproductive Freedom for All Director of Arizona Campaigns Athena Salman released the following statement:
“When Republican politicians can’t get their way, they cheat—even if it means undermining the will of millions of Arizonans who overwhelmingly voted to enshrine their right to abortion. Rep. Rachel Keshel is aiming to take that right away once again, despite Prop. 139, the abortion ballot measure, getting 23,669 more votes than her in her own legislative district. When anti-abortion politicians have the majority, they will always come for our reproductive rights and freedoms, and we are ready to mobilize our 90,000 members to show up and fight back.”
