Reproductive Freedom for All Strongly Condemns Costco for Siding with Politics Over Science in Decision to Refuse Mifepristone
Washington, DC — Today, Reproductive Freedom for All expressed deep disappointment in Costco’s decision to refuse to dispense mifepristone at any of its more than 500 pharmacy locations. The announcement ignores decades of scientific evidence and overwhelming public support for the legal right to abortion, including access to mifepristone, and instead aligns the company with the dangerous movement to undermine evidence-based health care.
Reproductive Freedom for All, President and CEO Mini Timmaraju released the following statement:
“By refusing to offer mifepristone, Costco has chosen politics over science, fear over facts, and ideology over the rights of its customers. This medication has been FDA-approved for more than 20 years, is overwhelmingly safe, and is supported by the vast majority of Americans who believe abortion should remain legal. Decisions like this don’t reflect consumer demand — they reflect caving to extremist agendas.”
This announcement follows months of lobbying from Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), Inspire Investing, and a group of anti-abortion state financial officials. Right-wing groups like ADF have long played a role in advancing anti-abortion agendas through high-profile pressure campaigns and legal avenues. These extremists are publicly calling the move a “significant win” and have announced plans to target CVS and Walgreens next.
This is the latest in a series of coordinated, baseless attacks on mifepristone led by anti-abortion extremists and politicians who are ignoring the reality:
- 8 in 10 Americans believe abortion should be legal in all or some cases.
- Mifepristone is safe and effective. It has had FDA approval for over 20 years.
- Mifepristone is used in over 60% of abortion care in the US and is also used in miscarriage management.
- Two in three Americans are concerned that restrictions on medication abortion would insert politicians into personal decisions.
