How The GOP Is Escalating Threats on Mifepristone to Ban Abortion Nationwide

Right now, we are witnessing the escalation of a years-long coordinated effort from anti-abortion politicians to restrict mifepristone. Mini Timmaraju, President and CEO of Reproductive Freedom for All, has said the GOP’s assault on mifepristone is part of a “coordinated strategy” to ultimately ban abortion nationwide and make reproductive health care inaccessible. That strategy isn’t limited to attacking mifepristone—it also includes working to pass a budget bill that would kick 13.7 million people off health insurance, shut down over 200 Planned Parenthood health centers, and spread disinformation to justify the GOP’s unpopular agenda.

The GOP’s attacks on mifepristone are a clear example of how bad actors are working together to ban abortion through every possible avenue. Republican Senator Josh Hawley’s bill to ban the mailing of mifepristone and HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. asking FDA Commissioner Makary to conduct a “complete review” of mifepristone came days after a Project 2025 sponsor organization published a junk science pseudo study filled with anti-abortion propaganda. Makary signaled that he’s open to restricting mifepristone, despite over 20 years of data that demonstrates its safety and efficacy.

In coordination with J.D. Vance, Congressional Republicans are also advocating to misuse a 150-year old law called the Comstock Act to block access to both abortion pills and medical equipment used for abortion care. Trump’s DOJ has already shown its hostility towards abortion access by refusing to robustly defend the safety and efficacy of mifepristone in Missouri v. FDA, a case seeking to limit access to medication abortion nationwide, leaving the door open for further attacks on mifepristone. Attorney General Pam Bondi, who has a record of attacking abortion access as Florida’s Attorney General, could try to misuse the Comstock Act to effectively ban abortion nationwide.

The bottom line is that the Trump administration is attacking mifepristone from every angle in a thinly veiled attempt to ban abortion nationwide.

THE FACTS

  • Mifepristone is safe, effective, and has been used by millions of people. Attacks on mifepristone are not based in science — they’re simply part of the MAGA agenda to ban abortion nationwide.
  • The evidence on mifepristone is clear. Mifepristone’s safety has been proven by more than two decades of scientific evidence.
  • Mifepristone has been safely used for decades. In fact, it’s safer than Tylenol. In addition to abortion care, mifepristone is also used for miscarriage management and can be a life-saving intervention.
  • Every person should have the freedom to make decisions during pregnancy without politicians interfering. Politicians are never more qualified than pregnant people and their doctors to make these decisions.
  • Medication abortion is currently used to provide more than half of all abortion care nationwide. Restricting access to mifepristone could eliminate abortion care for 64.5 million people.
  • The majority of Americans support abortion access, including access to medication abortion.
