We’re still fighting to stop health care prices from skyrocketing. Instead of fixing the mess that they made, Republicans are attacking abortion. They’re choosing extremism over freedom.

Hijacking negotiations on ACA health care policies risks millions of Americans’ ability to access affordable health care.

🔎 A Closer Look at What’s Happening with Abortion and the ACA Tax Credit Negotiations

Republican anti-abortion lawmakers are trying to use ACA tax credit negotiations to quietly push a new abortion ban.

Here’s how: They want to block people from using ACA tax credits if their health plan includes abortion coverage. These tax credits help make insurance affordable for 20 million Americans. Without the credits, premium payments would double for many families.

To be clear, we’re talking about people using their own money to pay for their health insurance plans.

If this harmful proposal passes, here’s what could happen:

• People may be priced out of plans that cover abortion without the ACA tax credits.
• Insurers would likely drop abortion coverage altogether because no one could afford those plans without tax credits.

The result: abortion coverage disappears—even in states where abortion is legal. This is by design.

👀 Anti-Abortion Groups Are In Republicans’ Ears

Right now, anti-abortion groups and lawmakers are leveraging this moment to try to eliminate abortion coverage from the ACA marketplace entirely.

Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, an anti-abortion group, is leading the campaign to pressure health insurers to stop covering abortion care.

We know the overwhelming majority of people in this country support abortion access and do not want additional restrictions on health care. Congress must reject any attempt to use critical health care negotiations to eliminate abortion coverage. 

Anti-abortion politicians and groups will stop at nothing to push their cruel, harmful agenda and rob us of our freedom to make decisions for ourselves about our lives and futures.

🛩️ Big Picture: We’ve Seen This Tired Playbook Before

This is a tired playbook. Time and again, anti-abortion lawmakers slip abortion restrictions into any bill they can, hoping to push abortion so far out of reach that even where it’s legal, it’s not accessible.

• Abortion opponents tried to ban coverage of abortion during the passage of the ACA.
• Then they tried it again when attempting to repeal the ACA during the first Trump Administration in 2017.
• Most recently, they tried again during the passage of the so-called “Big Beautiful Bill” H.R. 1 in July 2025.

Each time, they failed. And they’re trying again now.
