House Republicans Voted to Gut Medicaid and Defund Planned Parenthood

Cowards! Republicans in Congress sacrificed our health care for a pat on the back from Trump and to serve billionaires.

⚡️TL; DR (too long, didn’t read)

The GOP budget bill, which slashes $880 billion in Medicaid funding and “defunds” Planned Parenthood in order to pay for tax cuts for billionaires, has passed out of the U.S. House and is headed to the Senate next.

We’re disgusted, frankly, that they’d rather line the pockets of billionaires than ensure their constituents have basic health care access and coverage.

We must hold our lawmakers accountable. Send a message calling out your lawmakers who voted to cut Medicaid and defund Planned Parenthood (and thank the ones who opposed it).

🔎 The Background on the GOP’s Votes to Gut Medicaid and Defund Planned Parenthood

Republicans know this budget is extreme and wildly unpopular—that’s why the House GOP pushed to debate it in the middle of the night and vote in the early hours of the next morning.

If passed by Congress, millions of Americans in red and blue states alike will lose access to the health care they need.

Here’s what life without Medicaid would look like:

  • Over 70 million Americans who rely on Medicaid will have fewer coverage options, higher out-of-pocket costs, and less access to reproductive health care
  • People who need it most, like families with low incomes, people with disabilities, people in rural areas, and more, will lose their health care coverage
  • Doctors and hospitals will receive less funding, or none at all—causing them to limit their services or close entirely
  • People will lose optional benefits like home-based care and mental health

Additionally, Planned Parenthood is being targeted because their centers provide abortion care, even though 2 million patients rely on it for a variety of affordable, accessible reproductive health care services every year.

Defunding Planned Parenthood means restricting access to abortion, birth control, STI screenings, cancer screenings, and maternal health services for millions of people. Even Trump supporters oppose defunding Planned Parenthood.

Nearly 200 Planned Parenthood health centers—about a third nationwide—are at risk of closing, including many in states where abortion remains legal. In fact, over 90% of these centers facing closure are in abortion-friendly states. No other provider can fully fill the gap Planned Parenthood would leave behind.

And beyond that? This big, horrific bill also:

  • Includes the largest SNAP cuts in history
  • Rolls back ACA Marketplace access
  • Attacks gender-affirming care
  • Targets immigrant families
  • Includes major tax breaks for the rich

🛩️ The Big Picture: Project 2025

Republicans know access to reproductive health care is popular and Americans don’t want to see their health care stripped away—so they’re cheating the system by slashing Medicaid under the guise of reducing “waste” and “fraud.”

Gutting Medicaid and defunding Planned Parenthood is only one part of their overall scheme to ban abortion nationwide, as outlined in Project 2025.

⚠️ Hold Lawmakers Accountable for Attacking Medicaid and Planned Parenthood

Medicaid and Planned Parenthood are more popular than any politician, and Americans will not accept this attack on their health care.

Republican lawmakers are taking away health care from families and they will face the consequences at the ballot box. Our fight is not over. Next we will turn up the heat on the Senate to oppose this bill. More on that soon.

In the meantime, send a message to your U.S. House representative and tell them: We saw your vote. We won’t forget.
