ICYMI: Abortion is “A Key Part” of Democrats’ Closing Pitch to Voters: Mini Timmaraju Joins MS NOW’s The Assignment to Discuss The Final Stretch of the Midterms

Yesterday, Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju joined Antonia Hylton on MS NOW’s The Assignment to discuss how reproductive freedom is shaping Democrats’ messaging and how Republicans are running away from the issue. As Antonia Hylton described: “Democrats are making their final pitch to voters with single digit days until the election, and they’re making abortion a key part of it.”

Watch the full clip HERE, and read highlights below.

Antonia Hylton framed the stakes heading into Election Day:

  • Democrats’ final pitch to voters: “Democrats are making their final pitch to voters with single digit days until the election, and they’re making abortion a key part of it. Candidates in battlegrounds like Michigan, Maine, and Minnesota are all emphasizing a woman’s right to choose. Meanwhile, some Republican candidates are removing mentions of their record on abortion from their campaign websites.”
  • The stakes for individual freedom: “It’s a stark reminder of what’s at stake in this election in terms of individual freedom because on Election Day abortion rights will be on the ballot in four states: Idaho, Nevada, Virgina, and Missouri. And remember, Project 2025, the document the Trump administration has based so many policies on, it calls mifepristone ‘the single greatest threat to unborn children in a post-Roe world.’ The administration is working to have the FDA pull the pill entirely from the market.”

Mini Timmaraju highlighted why abortion is resonating with voters in the final stretch:

  • Reproductive freedom as a closing pitch: “Abortion is a really critical closing argument in these midterm elections. Everywhere we go, and I’ve been in five states this week with battleground races, reproductive freedom is that tipping-point issue. It’s the thing that really helps make it plain that Republicans are too extreme to represent average voters, including independent and Republican voters.”
  • Why abortion is central to Democrats’ closing arguments: “When we go to voters…in these battleground districts, voters are moved by up to five points when they know the stakes. […] Reproductive freedom has now become a bipartisan, nonpartisan issue, and the Republican Party just hasn’t caught up. So this makes it the ideal issue to close your campaign with, to signal to voters who’s with you and who’s not.”
  • The stakes of flipping Congress for the future of reproductive freedom: “Knowing that post-midterms, the Trump administration has made it clear they’re going to go after abortion care, these midterms become more important than ever. […] A lot of it will be about oversight, and a lot of it will be about raising the alarm, blocking future Trump appointees, making current Trump appointees answer to Congress about what their plans are.”
  • The path to restoring federal protections: “Going into 2028, it’s really going to be important that we are raising the alarm on these threats because what we need is a reproductive freedom trifecta: We need the House, we need the Senate, and we need the White House to codify a federal right to abortion in all 50 states.”
