Nation’s leading reproductive freedom advocacy group endorses three U.S. House candidates

Washington, DC—Today, NARAL Pro-Choice America announced its endorsement of three candidates—California Assembly Speaker pro Tempore Kevin Mullin (CA-15), Dr. Asif Mahmood (CA-40), and Cincinnati City Councilman Greg Landsman (OH-01)—running to represent their respective districts in the U.S. House of Representatives.

NARAL Pro-Choice America President Mini Timmaraju released the following statement:

NARAL Pro-Choice America is proud to endorse Assemblymember Kevin Mullin, Dr. Asif Mahmood, and Greg Landsman for election to the U.S. House of Representatives. These candidates are ready to take the bold action needed to safeguard abortion access as it faces urgent threats. NARAL and our members will be turning out to support these candidates to ensure they can protect the values of the 8 in 10 Americans who support the legal right to abortion.

These NARAL-endorsed candidates bring a wealth of experience and strong commitments to protect and advance reproductive freedom in Congress. California Assembly Speaker pro Tempore Kevin Mullin has represented the people of California’s 22nd District since 2012, previously serving as a South San Francisco City Council member and later mayor. During his tenure in elected office, more than 60 of the bills he sponsored became law, including landmark legislation to expand reproductive freedom. Dr. Asif Mahmood, running to unseat extremist, anti-choice incumbent Rep. Young Kim, is a physician who has dedicated his career to equitable care, providing free care in his practice for patients without access to health insurance. Greg Landsman, running to unseat extremist, anti-choice incumbent Rep. Steve Chabot, has served as a member of the Cincinnati City Council since 2018 and previously worked as a non-profit director and public school teacher. Landsman is a staunch advocate for reproductive freedom and has been outspoken in his support for locking the protections of Roe v. Wade into federal law.

These endorsements come as NARAL Pro-Choice America is ramping up its work to elect candidates up and down the ballot during a critical moment in the fight for reproductive freedom. NARAL recently announced a partnership with Planned Parenthood Action Fund and EMILY’s List to collectively spend a historic $150 million on the 2022 midterms to elect reproductive freedom champions up and down the ballot across the country.

In the coming months, the U.S. Supreme Court will rule in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization—a case about Mississippi’s 15-week abortion ban that directly challenges Roe v. Wade. A recently leaked draft majority opinion in the case indicates that the Court is poised to overturn Roe and end the constitutional right to abortion as we know it. California is home to more than a quarter of the nation’s healthcare facilities that provide abortion care. If the landmark abortion rights decision is undone, 28 states—including Ohio—are expected to take action to prohibit abortion outright. In this case, California is predicted to see a 2,923% increase in women of reproductive age whose nearest abortion provider would be in the Golden State.
