RE: Cuts To Medicaid Affect Two Thirds of Adult Women, 40% of Births
DATE: April 21, 2025
In order to give tax cuts to billionaires, Republicans in Congress are working to cut Medicaid at the expense of reproductive health care for millions of Americans. These cuts are expected in the coming weeks and are part of the GOP’s larger efforts to ban abortion nationwide by creating more barriers to fundamental health care.
Medicaid funds 75% of publicly funded family planning services, which include access to STI testing, cancer screenings, and birth control. Almost two-thirds of the 70 million people enrolled in Medicaid are adult women ages 19-44.
Medicaid also covers 40% of all births in the US, and the program plays a critical role in preventing maternal death. Medicaid covers pregnancy and postpartum care for 65% of Black mothers. States with robust access to Medicaid see lower maternal mortality rates because more people have continuous access to the care they need before, during, and after pregnancy.
The infographic below can be used as a resource to understand the multiple scenarios people across the country will face when the GOP slashes coverage for millions of Americans.
