NARAL Pro-Choice America Applauds Governor Tom Wolf for Filing Lawsuit to Protect Reproductive Rights in Pennsylvania
Harrisburg, PA — Yesterday, Governor Tom Wolf sued the Republican-led Pennsylvania General Assembly for their effort to amend the state’s constitution to explicitly affirm that the state does not guarantee any right relating to abortion by working to pass the No Right to Abortion Amendment (SB 106).
NARAL Pro-Choice America President Mini Timmaraju released the following statement in response:
“Yesterday’s action by Governor Wolf to stop lawmakers from forcing their unjust and radical anti-choice agenda into the state constitution is further proof that we need champions for reproductive freedom in governor’s offices now more than ever. These draconian attacks on our most fundamental freedoms are becoming more brazen as state and national Republicans push for total bans on abortion. It takes a champion like Gov. Wolf to do what’s right in the face of these attacks, and we applaud him for protecting our freedom to decide if, when, and how to start or grow a family.”
These actions come in the aftermath of the anti-choice supermajority on the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade in its ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. This cruel decision opened the door for extremist state lawmakers to enforce extreme bans on abortion. Roughly half of the states in the country are at risk of banning abortion, and thus far, over a dozen states have bans in place, and many more are rushing to do the same. The people hurt most by these bans and restrictions are those who already face barriers to accessing abortion care—including women; Black, Indigenous, and other people of color; those working to make ends meet; the LGBTQ+ community; immigrants; young people; those living in rural communities; and people with disabilities.
