Defeat of anti-choice, anti-freedom Republican candidate Alexis Johnson is a win for New Mexicans and reproductive freedom
New Mexico — Yesterday, voters in New Mexico’s 3rd Congressional District elected NARAL-endorsed candidate Teresa Leger Fernandez to the U.S. House of Representatives. Her victory over anti-choice, anti-freedom Republican candidate Alexis Johnson marks a huge win for reproductive freedom.
In response to Leger Fernandez’s victory, NARAL Pro-Choice America President Ilyse Hogue released the following statement:
“Teresa Leger Fernandez is a bold supporter of reproductive freedom, and NARAL Pro-Choice America is thrilled to congratulate her on her victory in New Mexico’s 3rd Congressional District. Leger Fernandez understands that reproductive freedom is a fundamental American value—and is willing to fight for it. That’s why NARAL was proud to have supported her in this race and to have mobilized members on her behalf to make sure voters in New Mexico are represented by somebody who will fight for their fundamental right to make their own decisions about pregnancy and parenting, including abortion.”
NARAL endorsed Leger Fernandez as part of its largest ever electoral program. NARAL reached over 3 million voters in key states including New Mexico through its historic 2020 electoral program.
New Mexico still has a dangerous pre-Roe abortion ban that is currently unconstitutional and unenforceable but has not been repealed. If Roe were to be overturned, the ban would allow for abortion only in a very limited number of cases, such as for survivors of rape or incest. With Roe in the crosshairs, the stakes for women and families in New Mexico are higher than ever.
