Defeat of anti-choice, anti-freedom Republican challenger Wesley Hunt is a win for Texans and reproductive freedom
Texas — Yesterday, voters in Texas’ 7th Congressional District reelected NARAL-endorsed incumbent Rep. Lizzie Pannhill Fletcher to the U.S. House of Representatives. Fletcher’s victory over anti-choice, anti-freedom Republican Wesley Hunt marks a huge win for reproductive freedom and holds a critical seat in the House.
In response to Fletcher’s victory, NARAL Pro-Choice America President Ilyse Hogue released the following statement:
“During Rep. Lizzie Fletcher’s time in the House of Representatives, she has fought for reproductive freedom time and again. NARAL was proud to support her in this race and we are grateful to her for running a campaign that puts women and families front and center. We are lucky to have Rep. Lizzie Fletcher with us in the fight for our fundamental rights and look forward to continuing our work together to protect and expand reproductive freedom.”
NARAL endorsed Fletcher as part of its largest-ever electoral program. NARAL reached over 3 million voters in key states including Texas through its historic 2020 electoral program.
Texas has some of the most severe restrictions on abortion in the United States, including forcing delays before people can receive abortion care and subjecting patients to mandatory biased counseling. These restrictions disproportionately harm BIPOC, low-income, and rural communities, and are part of a coordinated effort by the Radical Right to maintain white patriarchal control at all costs.
