NARAL Pro-Choice America Endorses Rep. Mary Peltola for Reelection to the U.S. House of Representatives
Rep. Mary Peltola earns endorsement of nation’s leading reproductive freedom advocacy group

Washington, DC Today, NARAL Pro-Choice America announced its endorsement of U.S. Representative Mary Peltola in her 2022 bid to represent Alaska’s at-large Congressional District for a full two-year term. Peltola recently won the special election to replace the late Congressman Don Young, who passed away in March of this year.

NARAL Pro-Choice America President Mini Timmaraju released the following statement:

“House Republicans have made it abundantly clear that they will plow ahead with a national abortion ban should they win power, underscoring exactly how high the stakes are in this election. Abortion rights are on the ballot, and Rep. Mary Peltola is the only candidate in this race committed to protecting them. Alaska needs Rep. Peltola in Congress and NARAL and our members are ready to go to the mat to ensure that she is reelected this November.”

U.S. Representative Mary Peltola released the following statement:

“Right now, Americans across the country are terrified the federal government will take away their privacy rights…and for good reason. The Supreme Court already made the radical decision to eviscerate 50 years of precedent protecting our reproductive rights and a person’s right to choose. I’m running for Congress to fight back and protect our privacy rights — and I’m so glad to have NARAL as a partner in this fight. Thank you for your endorsement. Now, let’s get to work!”

Mary Peltola is a leader in the fight for reproductive freedom and made abortion rights a central issue in her special election campaign. She has committed to locking protections for reproductive health care into federal law as she runs to serve a full two-year term to represent Alaska’s at-large District in Congress. Peltola is the first Democrat to represent Alaska in Congress since 1972 and, with her recent upset election, became the first Alaska Native and the first woman to ever represent the state in the U.S. House of Representatives.

In June, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in its decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization—ending the constitutional right to abortion and opening the door for extremist state lawmakers to put total bans on abortion in place. This decision is already having a devastating impact throughout the country as 15 states have begun enforcing extreme bans on abortion. The people hurt most by these bans and restrictions are those who already face barriers to accessing abortion care—including women; Black, Indigenous, and other people of color; those working to make ends meet; the LGBTQ+ community; immigrants; young people; those living in rural communities; and people with disabilities.

These endorsements come as NARAL Pro-Choice America is ramping up its work to elect candidates up and down the ballot during a critical moment in the fight for reproductive freedom. NARAL, Planned Parenthood Action Fund, and EMILY’s List announced a partnership in May to collectively spend a historic $150 million on the 2022 midterms to elect reproductive freedom champions up and down the ballot across the country.
