Nation’s Leading Reproductive Freedom Advocacy Organization Embarks on New Chapter in the Southeast Region
Atlanta — Today, NARAL Pro-Choice America announced the organization’s new Southeast campaigns director, Alicia Stallworth, who joined the organization earlier this month. In her new leadership role, Stallworth will be engaging voters across the Southeast region, including our more than 54,000 members in Georgia.
Stallworth previously served as the Georgia state director for Planned Parenthood Southeast, where she oversaw the organization’s advocacy and electoral efforts in the state. She led her team to help secure major electoral victories across Georgia in 2020 and 2021, helping to elect reproductive freedom champions up and down the ballot, from the state General Assembly to the White House.
NARAL Pro-Choice America Southeast Campaigns Director Alicia Stallworth said:
“The future of of abortion rights and access are in grave danger, and we must be unapologetic in the fight for reproductive freedom. Anti-choice lawmakers across the country and in Georgia have shown that they will stop at nothing to achieve power and control. I am proud to join NARAL Pro-Choice America at such a critical moment.
I look forward to working in the Southeast region to elect candidates who boldly stand up for reproductive freedom and to deepen NARAL’s relationships with leaders working on the ground to protect our fundamental rights.”
NARAL Pro-Choice America President Mini Timmaraju said:
“We are thrilled to have Alicia Stallworth joining our team as the new Southeast campaigns director during this pivotal moment. Alicia’s extensive background in reproductive freedom, community organizing, and coalition building will be vital to our work on the ground in Georgia and across the Southeast. We look forward to all that she will bring to the region to protect and advance reproductive freedom for every body.”
A South Florida native, Stallworth is an accomplished Democratic political strategist with over 10 years of experience in community organizing, coalition building, and communications. Her skills and talent will contribute to NARAL’s electoral program, which reached over 3 million voters in key states, including Georgia, in 2020.
Listening to state leaders and recognizing the power and necessity of real on-the-ground investments, NARAL Pro-Choice America launched its Georgia chapter in 2017 to help build the progressive momentum and infrastructure necessary to make Georgia a key battleground state. NARAL Pro-Choice Georgia spent years following the leadership and working alongside other in-state groups to lay the foundation to help flip Georgia blue, mobilizing tens of thousands of voters to turn out for reproductive freedom candidates in the 2020 elections.
Stallworth’s hire comes as reproductive freedom is in peril across the country like never before, particularly for Georgians and millions in the Southeast region who may rely on Georgia’s providers for abortion care. This year, more than 100 restrictions on abortion access have been enacted at the state level, making it the worst year for abortion rights since Roe v. Wade was decided. Recently, Georgia state Senate President Butch Miller (R) announced that he was working with anti-choice groups to pass a provision similar to Texas’ SB 8 during Georgia’s next legislative session. These restrictions disproportionately push access out of reach for Black and brown people, Indigenous people, and other people of color; LGBTQ people; those with low incomes; and others who face systemic barriers to care.
On December 1, the Supreme Court heard oral arguments in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization—a case regarding Mississippi’s 15-week abortion ban that directly challenges Roe. There is no path for the Court to uphold Mississippi’s ban without overturning the landmark abortion rights case. If Roe fell tomorrow, 26 states including Georgia would likely take action to prohibit abortion outright.
For over 50 years, NARAL Pro-Choice America has fought to protect and advance reproductive freedom at the federal and state levels—including access to abortion care, birth control, paid family leave, and protections from pregnancy discrimination—for every body. NARAL is powered by its more than 2.5 million members from every state and congressional district in the country, representing the 8 in 10 Americans who support legal abortion.
