NARAL Pro-Choice America Applauds Congressional Democrats Pulling Out All Stops to Advance Reproductive Freedom
Washington, DC — This week, ahead of the Dobbs anniversary, Democrats in the U.S. Congress pulled out all the stops to advance reproductive freedom.
- The Freedom to Travel for Health Care Act, led by Sens. Cortez Masto (D-NV), Whitehouse (D-RI), Murray (D-WA), and Gillibrand (D-NY), would underscore the Constitutional protections for interstate travel and empower the U.S. attorney general and impacted individuals to bring civil action against those who restrict somebody’s right to cross state lines to receive legal reproductive care.
- The Reproductive Health Travel Fund Act, led by Sens. Baldwin (D-WI) and Murray (D-WA) in the Senate and Reps. Strickland (D-WA), Bush (D-MO) and Fletcher (D-TX) in the House, would provide women and pregnant people the support they need to access abortion care by providing grants to organizations, including abortion funds, to offset the cost of travel-related expenses.
- Meanwhile, Democratic Leadership in both chambers have sprung into action to build on the legacy of Roe. In the House, Democrats are whipping signatures for a discharge petition to force Speaker McCarthy to hold a vote on the Women’s Health Protection Act. In the Senate, Democrats took to the floor to advance commonsense reproductive freedom legislation via unanimous consent, only to be blocked by Republicans.
NARAL Pro-Choice America President Mini Timmaraju released the following statement in response:
“As we mark one year since the Dobbs decision, the abortion access crisis is still raging, and millions of people are being denied the reproductive health care they need. Thank you to our Hill champions who have stepped up to meet these challenges with smart solutions that prioritize the pregnant people whose lives are being upended and endangered. From the right to travel to the critical work spearheaded by our reproductive justice partners, this work reflects the reproductive freedom agenda that 8 in 10 Americans support. We look forward to continued collaboration to get these bills to the President’s desk.”
