The “Reproductive Freedom for All” ballot initiative (Proposition 3) is a win for Michiganders and abortion access
Lansing, Michigan — Today, a majority of Michigan voters approved the “Reproductive Freedom for All” ballot initiative, which will enshrine reproductive freedom in the state’s constitution, including the right to abortion.
In response to this victory, NARAL Pro-Choice America President Mini Timmaraju released the following statement:
“Congratulations to all the activists, allies, and organizations who worked together to make this happen: you led the way and showed us all what’s possible in this new post-Roe v. Wade world. For everyone who said abortion was a losing issue; for everyone who said abortion is controversial; for everyone who said abortion is a fringe concern and not the meat-and-potatoes kitchen table problem Michiganders care about: you’re wrong, and the YES votes prove it. Pro-choice voters ARE the majority, and we are just getting started.”
In June, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in its decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization—ending the constitutional right to abortion and opening the door for extremist state lawmakers to put total bans on abortion in place. This decision is already having a devastating impact throughout the country as 15 states are enforcing extreme or total bans on abortion. The people hurt most by these bans and restrictions are those who already face barriers to accessing abortion care—including women; Black, Latina/x, Asian American, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander, and Indigenous people; those working to make ends meet; the LGBTQ+ community; immigrants; young people; those living in rural communities; people with disabilities, and other historically oppressed communities.
Currently, Michigan has placed on hold a 1931 pre-Roe ban on abortion that undermines reproductive freedom at every turn. Anti-choice extremism underscores how important it is to have reproductive freedom champions in the state’s legislature and secure the right to abortion through the “Reproductive Freedom for All” ballot initiative. As a growing number of other states began enforcing abortion bans after the fall of Roe and anti-choice Republicans in Congress made clear that they intend to push for a national ban on abortion, Michigan voters tonight made clear that their fundamental right to decide is not up for debate.
Knowing that a vote for the “Reproductive Freedom for All’ ballot initiative would protect and enshrine reproductive freedom in Michigan’s constitution, NARAL launched its largest-ever midterm electoral program to elect candidates up and down the ballot during this critical moment in the fight for reproductive freedom. The program focuses on deep-field investments in phone banking, door knocking, youth organizing, and canvassing, along with a robust communications campaign to support endorsed candidates and ballot initiatives in Michigan, Pennsylvania, Georgia, California, Arizona, and Nevada.
