NARAL Pro-Choice America Applauds President Biden’s Commitment to Reproductive Freedom in State of the Union Address
Washington, DC — Today, President Biden delivered his State of the Union address to a joint session of Congress and outlined key actions his administration is taking to protect the legal right to abortion. As abortion remains banned in large swaths of the country, the president firmly rebuked anti-choice efforts to further restrict our reproductive freedom. Additionally, First Lady Dr. Jill Biden was joined tonight by Amanda and Josh Zurawski, a Texas couple, in the White House viewing box. After Amanda’s water broke at just 18 weeks, local doctors were afraid to provide her with the care she needed because of the state’s abortion ban. Instead, she was forced to wait until she developed sepsis before she received care.
NARAL Pro-Choice America President Mini Timmaraju released the following statement in response:
“President Biden reaffirmed tonight that his administration will defend abortion rights—hard stop. It couldn’t come at a more crucial time. With 17 states enforcing bans on abortion and the anti-choice Republican House majority doubling down on their extreme policies, Americans are relying on the Biden administration to continue to defend our reproductive freedom. We are grateful for the president’s commitment to veto any extreme national bans on abortion that come from MAGA Republicans in Congress, and we look forward to continued collaboration with the administration to restore and expand abortion access.”
