NARAL Pro-Choice America Commends House Judiciary Democrats for Commitment to Transparency Ahead of Hearing
Washington, DC — Today, House Judiciary Democrats will hold a hearing on undue influence on the U.S. Supreme Court. The hearing follows a bombshell New York Times report revealing that a longtime anti-choice activist was told the outcome of the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2014 decision in Burwell v. Hobby Lobby Stores “weeks before it was announced,” allowing him “to prepare a public relations push” and tip off the head of the Hobby Lobby chain.
NARAL Pro-Choice America President Mini Timmaraju released the following statement in response:
“Our democracy depends on faith in our democratic institutions, and America’s highest court must be held to the highest ethical standard. The allegations uncovered by the Times report about undue influence and leaks in cases involving our reproductive rights further erode public trust in the judiciary at large. We are grateful to Chairman Nadler and House Judiciary Democrats for taking this matter seriously. Now, Congress must fully investigate and enact court reforms if we hope to defend democracy and realize a future where reproductive freedom is a reality for all of us.”
