Washington, DC — Today, NARAL Pro-Choice America announced its endorsement of State Senator Sydney Kamlager (SD-30) in her bid to represent California’s 37th Congressional District. State Sen. Kamlager is running to fill a vacancy left by U.S. Representative Karen Bass, who is now running for mayor of Los Angeles.
NARAL Pro-Choice America President Mini Timmaraju released the following statement:
“NARAL was proud to support State Senator Sydney Kamlager in 2018, 2020, and 2021—and we’re just as proud to support her again in 2022 in her bid for Congress. Throughout her time in office, state Sen. Kamlager has been a champion for the overwhelming majority of Californians who support reproductive freedom. With the Supreme Court’s anti-choice supermajority poised to potentially end Roe v. Wade in the coming months, it is more critical than ever that we elect champions like state Sen. Kamlager, who will fight to protect and expand abortion access in California and across the country.”
NARAL Pro-Choice California Director Shannon Olivieri Hovis released the following statement:
“State Senator Sydney Kamlager has been a stalwart champion for reproductive freedom in the California legislature. With our rights, freedoms, and access to abortion on the line across the country, we need voices like hers in the U.S. House, fighting not just for Californians but for every single American. State Sen. Kamlager has been an incredible lawmaker and advocate in the fight for reproductive freedom for all. She has authored several bills to make California a Reproductive Freedom state, including the California Future of Abortion Council-backed SB 1245 this year. We know she will work just as hard to ensure our federal laws protect the rights of everybody to make their own decisions about their families and their futures.”
State Senator Sydney Kamlager, candidate for Congress, said:
“Self-determination should be every person’s birthright, but the recent flood of prohibitions to abortion care access means that pregnant people—and especially those who are Black or Brown or poor—face futures that are cut short and derailed. I stand, arms locked, with NARAL in the fight to free us from these dark ages of inequality. We stand together and refuse to go silently.”
State Sen. Kamlager is a dedicated public servant and a bold advocate for reproductive freedom and abortion access. Before serving in the California Senate, she served in the State Assembly, where she sat on the Select Committee on Women’s Reproductive Health. As an assemblymember, Kamlager introduced NARAL-sponsored legislation to expand abortion access by eliminating cost-sharing for abortion care and was a principal coauthor of SB 245, signed into law by Governor Gavin Newsom in March. She previously served on the Los Angeles County Commission on Children and Families and was elected as a member of the L.A. Community College Board. Kamlager also serves on the board of Planned Parenthood Los Angeles.
This endorsement comes as NARAL Pro-Choice America is ramping up our work to elect candidates up and down the ballot during a critical moment in the fight for reproductive freedom. In the coming months, the U.S. Supreme Court will rule in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization—a case about Mississippi’s 15-week abortion ban that directly challenges Roe v. Wade. California is home to more than a quarter of the nation’s healthcare facilities that provide abortion care. If Roe falls, 28 states are likely to take action to prohibit abortion outright, and there could be a 2,923% increase in women whose nearest abortion provider would be in California. The Golden State will have an outsized role in helping pregnant people from all across the country access the abortion care they need.

NARAL is powered by its more than 2.5 million members from every state and congressional district in the country, representing the 8 in 10 Americans who support legal abortion.
