Press Release
Washington, DC — Today, NARAL Pro-Choice America marks one year since the January 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol by calling on the United States Senate to pass The Freedom to Vote Act, The Protecting Our Democracy Act, and The John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act by any means necessary.
NARAL Pro-Choice America President Mini Timmaraju released the following statement in response:
“The January 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol was a horrifying attempt to dismantle our democracy in service of a regressive, patriarchal, white supremacist agenda, and it didn’t happen in a vacuum. It is not a coincidence that prominent figures in the anti-choice movement were directly involved in this attack on our democracy—the anti-choice movement has long relied on undermining our democratic institutions to advance their unpopular ideological agenda.
With so much on the line for our fundamental freedoms, including reproductive freedom, this day serves as a chilling reminder of the future that awaits us if we do not act. January 6, 2021 marks either the beginning or the end of a chapter about our democracy and the freedoms we hold dear. To ensure it is the latter, our elected leaders must immediately pass crucial legislation to protect and expand the freedom to vote, and protect our democracy from those who wish for its downfall.”
Without truly fair, secure, and accessible elections, we can’t elect leaders who represent the values of the 8 in 10 Americans who support legal abortion. It is more important than ever that our leaders in the Senate take action to safeguard our fundamental freedoms at a time when our basic rights are under unprecedented attack. Last month, the Supreme Court heard oral arguments in a case that explicitly threatens the constitutional right to abortion—Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. This case, regarding Mississippi’s 15-week abortion ban, directly challenges Roe v. Wade. Any ruling that upholds Mississippi’s ban will overturn Roe’s core protections and our constitutional right to make decisions about our lives, families, and futures.
