Press Release
Washington, DC – Tonight, during the first Republican presidential debate, the candidates embraced their support for a national abortion ban that flies in the face of the values of the vast majority of Americans. The GOP’s embrace of a national ban could not be more out of touch with the will of the American people and their own voters. Recent polling found that 80% of voters oppose a federal abortion ban—including 65% of Republicans and 83% of independents. New Navigator polling also found that a majority of voters also “believe it is likely that Republicans would pass a nationwide abortion ban if they take control of both the White House and Congress in 2024.”
NARAL Pro-Choice America President Mini Timmaraju released the following statement in response:
The Republican Party is willing to say and do anything to pacify extremist anti-abortion groups, even as their bans wage immeasurable harm on Americans. Every single Republican on stage tonight supports a national abortion ban. That’s why we will fight like hell to ensure President Biden and Vice President Harris remain in the White House.”
