NARAL Pro-Choice America Responds to Chris Christie’s 2024 Campaign Launch

Washington, DC — Today, former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie filed paperwork to declare that he will seek the Republican presidential nomination for 2024. Christie, who claims that abortion does not “matter,” has a lengthy record of hostility towards reproductive freedom, including opposing Roe v. Wade, and saying that striking it down was the “right decision to make for the Court.” As governor, Christie stripped organizations that provide abortion care of funding and has since been an outspoken advocate for Republican governors seeking to restrict abortion rights in their states.

NARAL Pro-Choice America President Mini Timmaraju released the following statement in response: 

“Voters made their values clear at the ballot box last November—and they’ll be ready to show Chris Christie that abortion does in fact ‘matter’ to them again in 2024. He made this flippant and untrue comment to distract from his record as governor of New Jersey, where he stripped funding from organizations that provide abortion and blocked the expansion of Medicaid to cover reproductive health care in the state. Christie has aligned himself with extremist, anti-abortion politicians, and is just as dangerous as any of the candidates vying for the GOP nomination. Our members are ready to elect a president who reflects the values of the 8 in 10 Americans who support the legal right to abortion.”
