Phoenix — Yesterday, in her State of the State Address, Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs announced she will increase funding to the state’s Title X program to more than $12 million in order to provide critical care to expand reproductive and health care services in the state. Gov. Hobbs is the first reproductive freedom champion to represent Arizona as governor in more than a decade, and her leadership comes at a time when abortion rights are under attack like never before.
NARAL Pro-Choice America Southwest Regional Director Caroline Mello Roberson said:
“Everybody should have the freedom to make the best decisions about their lives, bodies, and futures without political interference—and 9 in 10 Arizonans agree. With this announcement, Governor Katie Hobbs is helping to ensure that young people, those with low incomes, and the uninsured and underinsured can access critical and comprehensive reproductive health care such as birth control, cancer screenings, and STI testing. NARAL Pro-Choice Arizona is proud to be in this fight alongside Gov. Hobbs and will continue to work with her to champion reproductive freedom in the state.”
Arizona polling from Change Research, conducted in both English and Spanish, shows a strong majority support for reproductive freedom. A large majority (90%) of voters in Arizona agree, with 78% in strong agreement, that each of us should have the freedom to decide how and when we start or grow a family, free from political interference. This includes 89% of independent voters, 82% of Republicans, and 87% of Latinx voters.
NARAL endorsed Gov. Hobbs as part of its largest-ever midterm electoral program to elect candidates up and down the ballot during this critical moment in the fight for reproductive freedom—knocking on over 2,000 doors, making nearly 36,000 calls, and sending over 51,000 texts.
