Press Release
Today, the Elections Committee Chairs of the California legislature called on Governor Newsom to issue an executive order that would put in place critical protections to ensure the safety of all voters statewide, including requiring all voters be mailed a ballot and setting minimum standards for in-person voting locations. In response, NARAL Pro-Choice California Director Shannon Hovis issued the following statement:
“On behalf of NARAL’s 270,000 members statewide, we are grateful for the leadership that state Senator Umberg and Assemblymember Berman continue to demonstrate as they fight to guarantee that the November election is accessible to all Californians.
The connection between reproductive freedom and protecting our right to vote is clear: Without elections that are truly fair, secure, and accessible, we can’t elect leaders who share and will represent the values of the 84% of Californians who support access to legal abortion.
No person should have to choose between staying healthy and exercising their right to vote. Ensuring that we have a democracy that facilitates participation for every body is critical for electing leaders who will safeguard each person’s freedom to make our own decisions about our families and futures.”
