NARAL Pro-Choice America Responds to Outcome of Election in Missouri’s 2nd Congressional District

Missouri — Yesterday, NARAL-endorsed candidate Jill Schupp lost her bid for election to the U.S. House of Representatives in Missouri’s 2nd Congressional District.
NARAL Pro-Choice America President Ilyse Hogue released the following statement in response:
“While we had hoped to see a different outcome in this race, NARAL Pro-Choice America and our members will never stop fighting for the 77% of Americans who believe in the legal right to abortion. There’s no question that Representative Ann Wagner’s record on reproductive freedom is wildly out of touch with the views of the vast majority of Americans. We are proud to have stood with Jill Schupp as she gave Rep. Wagner a run for her money in this tight race.”
NARAL Pro-Choice Missouri Executive Director Mallory Schwarz said:
“St. Louis County voters have put Ann Wagner on notice. Wagner and her extremist allies in Congress have spent the last eight years rolling back the clock on reproductive freedom. But make no mistake: St. Louis County voters will not let politicians off the hook for gutting access to abortion and affordable healthcare, and throwing our fundamental freedoms under the bus. We will hold her accountable to every vote, every attack, and every day she plays politics with our health. We are the reproductive freedom majority, and we are not backing down.”
In the 2020 election cycle, NARAL Pro-Choice America ran its largest-ever electoral program designed to reach, persuade, and mobilize key voters in target states across the country who are motivated by Trump and Republicans’ unyielding attacks on reproductive freedom.
Rep. Ann Wagner has consistently earned a 0% score from NARAL in the Congressional Record on Choice. In addition to voting to ban abortion and criminalize abortion providers, Wagner has voted to defund Planned Parenthood, dismantle the Affordable Care Act, and to allow employers and health care providers to discriminate against women. In January, she joined over 200 other anti-choice members of Congress in asking the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade.
