NARAL Pro-Choice America Responds to Biden Administration’s Day of Action on Abortion
Washington, DC — Today, the Biden administration marked Women’s Equality Day with a day of action to address abortion access and met with state and local officials about the fight for reproductive freedom. Meanwhile, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) released a report and plan of action responding to President Biden’s executive order issued after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. HHS and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) also issued a letter to governors encouraging and offering support to states to expand access to abortion within Medicaid’s legal limits for pregnant people traveling out of state for abortion care.
NARAL Pro-Choice America President Mini Timmaraju released the following statement in response:
“Our fight for reproductive freedom is only growing more urgent as anti-choice extremists continue to enact abortion bans that are blocking millions of Americans from care in their home states. We’re grateful that the Biden administration continues to take this crisis seriously, and look forward to continuing to work with them to protect abortion rights and access.”
These actions come in the aftermath of the anti-choice supermajority on the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade in its ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. This cruel decision opened the door for extremist state lawmakers to enforce extreme bans on abortion. Roughly half of the states in the country are at risk of banning abortion, and thus far, 14 states are enforcing bans and many more are rushing to do the same. The people hurt most by these bans and restrictions are those who already face barriers to accessing abortion care—including women; Black, Indigenous, and other people of color; those working to make ends meet; the LGBTQ+ community; immigrants; young people; those living in rural communities; and people with disabilities.
