Reproductive Freedom for All Applauds Senate Democrats for Bringing SCERT Act for Unanimous Consent as GOP Blocks Effort
Washington, DC — Today, Senate Democrats brought a request for the Supreme Court Ethics, Recusal, and Transparency (SCERT) Act to be brought up for unanimous consent before Republicans blocked the effort. This push was led by Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Dick Durbin (D-IL), U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), and U.S. Senator Peter Welch (D-VT). The unanimous consent request comes as new revelations about the U.S. Supreme Court’s conservative justices continue to come to light, underscoring the urgent need for court reform—including a code of conduct.
Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju released the following statement:
“As new reports continue to emerge showing exactly how compromised the Supreme Court’s conservative justices are, it’s more clear than ever that we must act now to restore the legitimacy of the Court. Senate Democrats understand the urgency, and we applaud their efforts to address this crisis. It’s clear that Republicans have no interest in ensuring our judiciary has fair and impartial judges, and will continue to prioritize their political agenda over our democracy. We can’t and we won’t stop fighting until there’s accountability and transparency in our country’s highest court.
