Reproductive Freedom for All Calls for Susan Collins to Address Her Anti-Abortion Record During Senate Debate
Washington, DC — Ahead of tonight’s U.S. Senate debate in Maine, Reproductive Freedom for All is calling on Senator Susan Collins to take accountability for her role in overturning Roe v. Wade—including her decisive vote to confirm Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.
The closely watched race could determine control of the U.S. Senate and presents Maine voters with a stark choice between Collins’ anti-abortion record and Troy Jackson’s record of protecting and expanding reproductive freedom.
Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju released the following statement:
“Susan Collins played a decisive role in overturning Roe v. Wade, and any attempt to backtrack on that in tonight’s debate will be yet another bald-faced lie. Troy Jackson is the only candidate in this race who has proven that he will uphold the will of Mainers if elected, and we urge voters to pay attention to what Collins has actually done—not her empty promises—as she takes the stage tonight.”
Collins voted to confirm Kavanaugh after arguing that he would respect Roe as settled precedent. Kavanaugh later joined the Supreme Court’s 5-4 majority overturning Roe, ending the constitutional right to abortion and paving the way for abortion bans across the country.
Jackson, by contrast, spent more than a decade in the Maine State Senate working to protect reproductive freedom. As Senate president, he co-sponsored legislation strengthening Maine’s privacy laws and protecting physicians’ ability to provide abortion care based on their professional expertise.
