Reproductive Freedom for All Celebrates Abigail Spanberger’s Victory in Virginia Governor’s Race

Today, Virginia voters elected Rep. Abigail Spanberger to be governor of Virginia. Since Roe v. Wade was overturned, abortion access has been decimated in Southern states, leaving Virginia as the only safe haven state for people seeking abortion care. By electing Rep. Spanberger to serve as the state’s next governor, voters have protected reproductive freedom in Virginia.

Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju released the following statement:

“This was a well-deserved and hard-fought victory for Governor-elect Abigail Spanberger. Tonight’s win ensures that the commonwealth remains a safe haven for abortion access for Virginians and for people in the South who have to travel to get care. Spanberger made clear throughout her campaign that she will defend abortion access, and this victory is further proof that abortion is a deeply galvanizing issue for voters. Our members showed up in a big way by making calls, sending texts, and knocking doors—all to elect a governor who will fight to protect their rights.”

Virginia’s 2025 election is a bellwether for the future of reproductive freedom in states across the country heading into 2026. Reproductive Freedom for All spent $1 million on the “Your Vote, Your Freedom” campaign in Virginia, including:

  • Launching a six-figure paid canvass operation to engage and mobilize key voters
  • Knocking on 36,500 doors, making 12,000 calls, and thousands of texts, as well as partnering with the Virginia Coordinated Campaign on multiple Northern Virginia canvasses
  • Running ads in the gubernatorial race highlighting Winsome Earle-Sears’ extreme position on abortion
  • Organizing multiple events, educating our 112,000 members in Virginia about what’s at stake, including a campus program at our Virginia Tech chapter to turn out the vote
