Sacramento, CA — Today, Reproductive Freedom for All-endorsed candidate Xavier Becerra defeated Trump-endorsed Republican Steve Hilton, becoming the first Latino elected governor of California.
Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju released the following statement:
“Xavier Becerra’s victory keeps California safe for patients and providers while anti-abortion politicians try to export their bans across state lines. Tonight proves that Californians want a governor who champions reproductive freedom and will protect doctors from prosecution, which is why they rejected Steve Hilton’s anti-abortion extremism.”
Reproductive Freedom for All Senior Director of California Campaigns Kristin Slevin released the following statement:
“Xavier Becerra has spent his career protecting Californians’ freedom to make their own decisions about their bodies and futures, from the courtroom to the highest levels of the federal government. We look forward to working alongside him to keep California a leader in protecting reproductive freedom.”
Reproductive Freedom for All endorsed Becerra in October and backed his campaign through My Body. My Ballot., a $23.5 million campaign and the organization’s largest-ever midterm electoral program. Reproductive Freedom for All has more than 484,000 members in California, many of whom knocked doors and made calls to help make Becerra’s victory possible.
Becerra has defended reproductive freedom at every level of government. As California attorney general, he defended the state’s Reproductive FACT Act, which prohibits clinics from giving patients misleading information about abortion and contraception. As U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services, he led efforts to protect access to medication abortion, reinforce hospitals’ emergency-care obligations, and safeguard patients’ reproductive health information after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade.
Steve Hilton, a former Fox News host, said he would open the door to anti-abortion states extraditing California doctors to face criminal charges for providing legal abortion care.
