Washington, DC — Today, Reproductive Freedom for All-endorsed candidate Josh Turek won his bid to represent Iowa in the U.S. Senate, defeating anti-abortion extremist Ashley Hinson. This victory marks the first time in 18 years that Iowans have elected a reproductive freedom champion to the U.S. Senate.
Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju released the following statement:
“Josh Turek will be the first reproductive freedom champion to represent Iowa in the U.S. Senate in 18 years, and he’s made clear he will defend the values that Iowans hold dear. By rejecting Ashley Hinson and securing this monumental victory for Turek, Iowa voters have spoken: they want leaders whose loyalty lies with them, not with the Trump administration.”
Reproductive Freedom for All endorsed Turek in July as part of the organization’s historic My Body. My Ballot. program, a $23.5 million campaign to mobilize voters, hold anti-abortion politicians accountable, and elect reproductive freedom champions in key races across the country. Reproductive Freedom for All also launched a $300,000 mail program contrasting Turek’s record of fighting for access to care with Ashley Hinson’s and Thomas Laehn’s records on abortion bans.
Turek has remained committed to fighting back attacks on reproductive freedom and championing policies to protect and expand access to care throughout his career. As an Iowa State Representative, he wrote and sponsored legislation to repeal the state’s extreme, near-total abortion ban.
In the Iowa House of Representatives, Hinson cosponsored a national abortion ban and signed onto an amicus brief urging the United States Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade. She also repeatedly voted against legislation that would protect and expand access to reproductive healthcare.
