Reproductive Freedom for All Condemns House Passage of the SAVE Act

Washington, D.C.— Today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act. The bill would impose the unnecessary and onerous requirement that a birth certificate or similar documentation be presented when registering to vote and would require a voter’s name to match their birth certificate. According to the Brennan Center for Justice, 21.3 million people in 2024 reported that they do not have proof of citizenship readily available. This legislation could bar millions from voting and targets trans people, new citizens, married women who have changed their last name, and more.

Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju released the following statement in response:

“Voting is a fundamental right, and these attacks on our democracy are designed to prevent millions of people from being able to cast their ballots. The fight for reproductive freedom is intertwined with the fight for democracy, and both are built on the simple idea that every American has the right to vote. We’re hopeful that the Democratic leadership in the Senate will stop this bill from going any further, and we’ll be ready to hold them accountable if they let Trump and the GOP get away with another blatant attempt to decimate our basic freedoms.”
