Reproductive Freedom for All Condemns Senator Hawley’s Bill To Revoke FDA Approval of Mifepristone
Washington, DC — Today, Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) introduced legislation in the Senate that would revoke FDA approval of mifepristone and make it illegal to distribute nationwide. The bill builds on legislation Hawley introduced last year that targeted mifepristone access through the mail.
This bill comes on the heels of Hawley’s recent criticism of the FDA. After the agency announced its review of mifepristone could take several years, he accused the agency of “not taking it seriously.” Hawley has consistently voted against reproductive freedom throughout his time in office, and has previously pushed legislation to defund Planned Parenthood and restrict abortion access for minors.
In a press conference about the introduction of the bill, Hawley once again cited a debunked, anti-abortion propaganda “study” that makes false claims about mifepristone’s safety. Mifepristone has been approved by the FDA for more than two decades and is backed by extensive medical evidence demonstrating its safety and efficacy.
Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju released the following statement:
“Let’s not forget: Senator Hawley’s own constituents voted to protect abortion access. But he and his extremist colleagues will not stop until they’ve banned abortion nationwide.”
This is the latest of several coordinated efforts to eliminate access to medication abortion at the federal level and push abortion care out of reach in every state, even where abortion is protected. In 2024, constituents in Hawley’s own state of Missouri voted to enshrine abortion access in their state constitution.
