Reproductive Freedom for All Condemns Trump Executive Order Targeting Trans People With Anti-Abortion Language
Washington, DC — Donald Trump signed an executive order within hours of taking office on Monday that not only attempts to erase trans people but also contains language nodding to conservatives’ efforts to insert “personhood” language defining life as beginning at conception into federal law. The consequences of putting personhood language into law could be sweeping. Not only would it criminalize abortion, but it could also ban stem cell research, assisted reproductive technology like IVF, and common forms of birth control. This executive order is one of many recent examples of Republicans’ revealing their true intent to ban abortion and block access to other reproductive health care, dismissing the will of the vast majority of Americans.
Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju released the following statement:
“It took less than 24 hours for Donald Trump to target the LGBTQ+ community and signal to anti-abortion advocates that he intends to again bring their harmful agenda to life. Trump is showing he never intended to follow through on his promise to stay out of federal law on abortion. We condemn this dangerous order and its attack on the trans community. This is only the beginning and we will hold the GOP accountable for their continued attacks on our fundamental rights and freedoms.”
