Reproductive Freedom for All Condemns Virginia Supreme Court for Overturning Voter-Approved Congressional Redistricting Referendum
Washington, DC — Today, the Virginia Supreme Court struck down the state’s congressional redistricting referendum, which was approved by voters last month in an effort to balance the scales and protect democracy. The court’s 4-3 ruling invalidated the ballot measure that Virginia voters approved to temporarily draw new congressional maps ahead of the 2026 midterms, after Trump and his allies moved to gerrymander maps across the country in an attempt to cling to GOP seats this November as this administration’s approval rating continues to plummet.
Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju released the following statement:
“Virginians made their voices heard and voted to protect our democracy. By overturning the will of the voters, the Republican-appointed majority on the state’s Supreme Court has given Trump and Republicans the power to protect their majority in the House because they know they are headed for crushing losses in the midterm elections. Rigging the system is the only way their unpopular policies can advance.”
This ruling represents a broader campaign from GOP lawmakers to undermine democratic participation and weaken the political power of communities across the United States. It comes amid escalating redistricting fights following the Supreme Court’s decision in Louisiana v. Callais that struck down Louisiana’s map creating a second majority-Black district and greenlit states across the country to gerrymander maps in ways that undermine fair representation ahead of the 2026 midterms.
