Reproductive Freedom for All Releases Statement on Florida’s Extreme Abortion Ban Going Into Effect
Washington, DC — Today, Florida’s extreme 6-week abortion ban goes into effect. Earlier this year, the Florida Supreme Court ruled in favor of anti-abortion extremists, upholding the state’s 15-week abortion ban. That decision cleared the way for Republicans’ six-week abortion ban to take effect today. At the same time, the court handed down a separate decision allowing an abortion rights ballot measure to move forward, setting up a critical opportunity for voters to enshrine the right to abortion in the state’s constitution and undo the Court’s disastrous decision to enact an extreme abortion ban with its ruling.
Florida remained one of the only states in the Southeast that was able to provide abortion care for up to 15 weeks. Florida now joins surrounding states with extreme abortion bans further exacerbating the health care crisis this area of the country is already facing.
Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju released the following statement in response:
“There are countless people whose lives and health will be at risk because of this reckless and extreme abortion ban, including the many people who have turned to providers in Florida for care after bans were enacted in their home state. Let’s be clear: this ban will put countless lives at risk in Florida and throughout the South. But voters in Florida can fight back and end this ban in November by supporting the Yes on 4 ballot measure to protect their reproductive freedom and voting for candidates that will restore a federal right to abortion. We will continue to fight alongside our allies in the state to make this happen.”
