Reproductive Freedom for All Responds to GOP 2024 Abortion Platform
Washington, DC — Today, the GOP’s platform committee doubled down on the party’s commitment to banning abortion nationwide. The updated language includes full support for abortion bans and anti-abortion language referencing the 14th Amendment, which could be used to ban all abortion as well as some forms of contraception and IVF if passed into law. It has also been reported that anti-abortion extremist groups are endorsing the updated platform language, further signaling that the GOP will not stop their work to end all abortion access.
Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju released the following statement in response:
“The GOP wants to ban abortion nationwide—and their platform shows that they’ll try to use the 14th Amendment to do it. Voters don’t want abortion bans—Republicans know it and this plan shows just how desperate Donald Trump and MAGA Republicans are to do anything they can to strip away our reproductive freedom.”
Donald Trump has said he supports the platform and according to a report from Politico, “didn’t just edit the platform language, but wrote some parts of the 15-page draft himself, according to a person with knowledge of his involvement.” While Trump has repeatedly tried to distract from his anti-abortion record and conceal his plans to ban abortion nationwide, his Project 2025 playbook includes detailed plans to do exactly that. Trump’s record during his time in office speaks for itself:
- Stacked the federal judiciary with conservative ideologues and built the anti-abortion supermajority on the Supreme Court that overturned Roe v. Wade and ended the federal right to abortion.
- Installed anti-abortion extremists in key leadership roles throughout his administration, including Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley, former U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions, former Health and Human Services Secretaries Tom Price and Alex Azar, and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
- Put the harmful domestic gag rule in place. This anti-abortion policy decimated the Title X family planning network by forcing many health care providers out of the program who—in addition to other services—provided abortion care. The restriction also prohibited Title X providers from referring for abortion care.
- Reinstated and expanded the anti-abortion global gag rule. Though previous Republican presidents have applied the policy, the Trump administration’s version greatly expanded it to apply to organizations receiving any U.S. global health assistance.
- Voiced that people who seek abortion care should be subject to “some sort of punishment.”
