Reproductive Freedom for All Responds to Steve Hilton’s Advancement to General Election for California Governor
Washington, DC — Republican Steve Hilton has officially advanced to the November ballot in California’s gubernatorial election, setting up a general election that will determine whether California continues to protect abortion patients and providers or elects a Trump-endorsed extremist who would leave them exposed to attacks from anti-abortion states.
Hilton previously stated he would allow anti-abortion states to target California doctors for providing abortion care that is legal in California. In the final California gubernatorial debate, Hilton forcefully doubled down on his position, raising new concerns about whether California’s next governor will defend patients and providers from politically motivated prosecution.
Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju released the following statement:
“Steve Hilton has made his position clear: He would side with anti-abortion states trying to prosecute Californians over his own constituents. As Trump’s endorsed candidate in this race, Hilton is part of a national anti-abortion agenda aimed at pushing care out of reach everywhere—even in states like California where abortion is protected. California needs a leader who will hold the line against coordinated national efforts to roll back reproductive freedom, not help advance them.”
Reproductive Freedom for All Senior Director of California Campaigns Kristin Slevin released the following statement:
“California has spent years building protections for patients and providers while anti-abortion politicians across the country have worked to criminalize care. Steve Hilton would put all of that progress at risk. At a time when attacks on abortion access are escalating across the country, the last thing California voters need is an extremist governor who will gladly sacrifice their rights to gain more political points with Trump and his allies. Our members are already mobilizing to make sure he is swiftly rejected this November.”
